Reflecting on transformation and resilience in flowers drink the river.
I was first introduced to the work of Pia-Paulina Guilmoth, when she still called herself Paul, in Sleep Creek. The photobook she made together with Dylan Hasuthor. In the past few years a lot has changed. She transitioned gender and began with Hormone Replacement Therapy. Her latest book, flowers drink the river, Guilmoth continues to present haunted scenes from rural Maine. But this time in the context of a period of change in her life. Being a trans woman in a small conservative community can be very scary. The pictures in flowers drink the river reveal nocturnal dreamscapes. It gives the book a mysterious quality. Flowers drink the river is a deeply personal project, which was reflected in this rather complex book. The work has themes of vulnerability, resilience, and reconnection with the natural world. It resulted in a fine and beautiful book.
