Rosalind Fox Solomon's half century of self-portraits

Photographer Rosalind Fox Soloman began photographing at age 38. For this reason A Woman I Once Knew, a decades-long archive of unflinching self-portraits, shows portraits of an aging woman, where the majority of the photographs are nude. But the text of the book, written by Solomon herself, traces her life to its origins. None of the images in A Woman I Once Knew are captioned or dated. But they follow a roughly chronological progression through Solomon's latter decades. In her text she chronicles self-sabotage and depressions. A Woman I Once Knew is a rare portrait of an artist: it is a visual autobiography. Sadly Rosalind Fox Solomon died in New York City on June 23, 2025 at the age of 95.
