My America: police brutality in the United States
In the US, approximately 1000 people continue to die each year in encounters with the police. More than in any other industrialised nation. My America by American photographer Diana Matar is an archive of and memorial to victims of these encounters. The photographs taken at locations where citizens were shot or tasered by law enforcement officers, create a critique of the contemporary United States. The scale of the book attests to the scale of the problem yet Matar aks us to remember that these victims are individuals. Matar wanted to see whether the events had left traces in the landscape. She was upset to find out that only seven of the sites she visited had any kind of memorial.
