Dog Food
Going Dutch

Dog Food, an annual photography zine, is Going Dutch. This is evident, among other things, because the Foto-roman, a regular section in the zine, contains a handful of Dutch sayings. Like “hij ligt op apegapen” which means he’s dying. And “nu komt de aap uit de mouw” literally translated “now the moneky comes out of the sleeve” and means that everything becomes clear. It fits perfectly into the concept of the photography zine: combining archival material like found photo’s with a splash of irony and a dash of cynism.

Going Dutch is the eleventh issue of Dog Food. Edited since 2012 by photographers Arjen Zwart and Jason Eskenazi. For Going Dutch joined by photo historian Hedy van Erp as guest editor. Dog Food is funny and its irony and cynism give it a pleasant lightness.

Portrait of a man behind a bush ca. 1900 - 1930

In Going Dutch we find a lavishly documented road trip by a Dutch amateur photographer and his companion to Spain in 1970. Their yellow Volkswagen Beetle plays the leading role. The pictures were found on Dutch classified advertising site Marktplaats. Hedy van Erp herself plays the leading role in a Foto-roman, giving her Photo Manifesto. As befits a real manifesto with the usual pomposity and capital letters. But with just enough irony.

Furthermore, the magazine contains pictures of the dogs of an Amsterdam couple, a waiter from the popular Dutch seaside resort Scheveningen and his wife photographing each other in the 1930s, members of the Dutch royal family in the 1950s and 1960s wearing fur coats, portraits of people behind and in between bushes, hedges and leaves.

Regular sections, besides the Foto-roman and Manifesto, are a full-page fingerprints of famed photographers’ Trigger-Fingers and  a 10/10 list of photographers favorite films and books. As might be expected, they are all Dutch photographers. All in all, Dog Food is a joy to experience.
